30 Key Lessons in Aromatherapy Over 30 Years!

Introduction: 30 Key Lessons in Aromatherapy

Part 2 of 3: Lessons 11-20

30 key lessons in aromatherapy
Julie, Joy and a Graduate

The 30 key lessons in aromatherapy featured in this series offer a powerful way for us to reflect and learn. Thirty years of teaching have taught us that while essential oils have been at the heart of what we teach, it is the people who have truly captured our hearts.

When my mom, Joy Watson, first began teaching, classrooms meant four walls, a chalkboard, and the physical scent of lavender and cedarwood filling a shared room. Over the years, our world has expanded in ways we never could have imagined. Today, our virtual classrooms bridge oceans, connecting students from completely different time zones who share a deep, abiding love for aromatherapy and integrative care.

Yet, no matter how screens have replaced chalkboards, the warmth remains entirely real. Looking back over the last three decades, the most profound lessons we’ve learned aren’t just about molecules and distillation methods—they are about community, patience, and the quiet power of human compassion.

In our series, 30 Key Lessons in Aromatherapy Over 30 Years, we are sharing some of the most meaningful lessons we have learned along the way.

Here are the next 10 lessons from our journey:

Lessons in Community & Growth

  1. Virtual spaces hold real warmth: You don’t need to be in the same physical room to build a close community. Laughter across a video call, shared breakthroughs in a student forum, and digital study groups prove that connection transcends distance.
  2. Celebrate the small stuff: Unboxing your very first student kit is a core memory! That first inhale of amber bottles lined up in a wooden box marks the official beginning of a lifelong journey with aromatics.
  3. Intuition grows from practice: The more you blend, the more you trust your gut alongside the science. Knowledge gives you the boundaries, but experience gives you the confidence to listen to your inner voice.
  4. Nature never rushes: Patience is an important part of every blend and every journey towards wellness. Just as a plant takes its time to mature, wellness and recovery often take time too.

Lessons in Compassion & Connection

  1. Compassion makes it complete: All the scientific data in the world means nothing without a caring heart. Wellness education is strengthened by empathy, active listening, and compassion.
  2. Fill your own cup: You can’t care for others from an empty cup. As practitioners, parents, and caregivers, taking time for our own self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s an absolute necessity.
  3. Students are our professors: Every single question asked in class has made us better educators. Our students constantly remind us to stay curious, humble, and open to new perspectives.
  4. Connection matters: Genuine human kindness does the heavy lifting. A comforting word, a listening ear, and a safe space can make a meaningful difference.
  5. Meet people where they are: There’s no single path in aromatherapy. Whether you’re blending for your family or building a clinical practice, your journey is uniquely your own.
  6. Take a deep breath: Pause and center yourself before offering guidance to others. A single intentional breath grounds us, clearing our minds so we can show up fully for those who need us.

The 30 key lessons in aromatherapy remind us that aromatherapy is an act of love. In the final part of our anniversary series, we’ll explore the legacy we are building together and the lessons resilience has taught us for daily practice over the past thirty years.

Joy’s Wisdom

When my mom, Joy, met her husband Pete, he suffered terribly from cluster headaches. Determined to find something that might help him, she began experimenting with different approaches.

No single essential oil seemed to make enough of a difference on its own. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and peppermint (Mentha piperita) were oils she associated with pain relief, while rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) was traditionally valued as a cephalic oil. She had also come across eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) being used in other headache blends, which prompted her to explore how it might complement the other oils.

Through a process she readily admits was more trial and error than science, she began experimenting with different combinations. 4 drops of each essential oil in 8mls carrier oil. She also incorporated reflexology, which Pete found helpful while she continued refining the blend.

It wasn’t a quick process. Over approximately four years, she adjusted and experimented with the formula, observing Pete’s response along the way. Initially, they noticed that his attacks seemed shorter. Over time, as she refined the combination, his cluster headaches eventually stopped.

That experience became the inspiration for one of my mom’s most enduring personal blends: Headache Be Gone!
